Open standards

Recently i was reading an article about ODF. Clearly open standards are what we should be looking for. Binding ourselves to a proprietary is going to harm us in the future. For example if i have a document i would want it to be accesible to me for eternity. Just because the software it was created in is no longer available or for a price shouldnt mean anything.

Heck i "own" that data. So the bottom line is softwares (like Open office) which support open document standards need to be encouraged.

I disagree with you, I am using Open source software for few works, but now most of them stop development on their software and one of such software I lost in Hard disk crash. So I have nothing left to recover its data.

what you have to say

I am not sure why it happened but generaly most "good" softwares get support from users as well as develpers. The more interest in that particular project the more it evolves.

About your data loss, have you tried contacting the original developer, probably he would be able to help you out.
